Hold on to your winter hats, boys and girls, we are getting ready to have some cold weather fun over here at Nancy’s Notions! We are starting a Quilt Along with our free quilt block series! This is a fun and easy project that is F-R-E-E free! And who doesn’t love fun, easy, and free? I certainly do!!
This is the perfect project for those cold dreary days that a lot of us are facing right now. (For those who are living in warmer climates, you’ll love this project too. Even if you’re wearing shorts.) Each week we release a new quilt block pattern. All you have to do is print it or download it and voila! You’re ready to start sewing!
There will be 20 blocks total. Each block is 12 1/2″ and will finish at 12″ once you have them all sewn together. This makes a gorgeous sampler!
Each week the next block in the series will be posted on our homepage and under “Quilting 101.” Under the Quilting 101 category, there is a sub-category called “Free Quilt Blocks.” All of the blocks will be able to be found there after they are posted each week.
(Disclaimer: These blocks were originally released by Nancy’s Notions in 2018, so some of you may already have them.)
There are no rules to this quilt along. There is no sign-up sheet. You don’t have to let us know that you are participating. All you have to do is download or print the free block patterns each week and make the blocks! It’s so easy! I would love to see some pictures of your process though! Feel free to send me pictures of your blocks as you sew along – I may just show them right here in my blog! You can email me at beth@nancysnotions.com.
I truly can’t wait to see everyone’s quilts when they are finished! What colors will you use? This quilt would be perfect for using up scraps or for that new fabric that you’ve had your eye on! When you get your quilt finished, be sure to send it in to Quilt & Tell! We love to see what you have made and your quilt may be chosen to be featured. To learn more about how to enter Quilt & Tell, click here.
I hope you enjoy this super fun quilt along! Happy sewing!
‘Til next time!
Beth

Thank You – I will work to catch up with everyone.
I love the multi color border on the free quilt blocks…..are their any instructions on making that?
Hi Colleen! That is just a simple piano key border. I’ll try to schedule a post about that, but for now, just cut a bunch of 4 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ rectangles and sew together randomly. Cut to the length and width of your quilt and that’s all there is to it. Happy sewing!
I’m not seeing fabric requirements listed anywhere. How many lights, mediums & darks are needed, and in what amounts. Thanks in advance
How much sashing material is needed?
Where do we find the list of fabrics needed to make this quilt?
It’s January 11 and I’m late to the party. Just found this project and I’m really anxious to get started. When is block 14 scheduled to be released?
Hi Jean! We release one block each week. They are posted to the website on Wednesday afternoons. Happy sewing!
I’m just starting on this and am already worried about how to finish it. Are there instructions for how to do the pieces that go around each square before connecting all the rows?
Where will I find Block 14 thru 20 to finish the sampler
Where will I find Block 114 thru 20 to finish the sampler?
Hi Rhonda! A new block is released each week. They are added to the website on Wednesday afternoons. Block 14 just dropped this week and you can expect 15-20 over the next 6 weeks.
What are the fabric requirements? There was a mention of scraps but I might like to use just basic colors. Thank you.
Where’s the pattern for week 16? I thought they were dropped on Wednesdays. It’s now Friday night and I can’t seem to find it. Thank very much.
Hi Marlyn. I have linked it now. I guess it did not get updated on time. I’m sorry! But, also, each week’s newest block can always be found on our homepage, as well as under the category Free Quilt Blocks. (Just click on Quilting 101 and you will see lots of quilting categories! Free Quilt Blocks is just one of them!) There are lots of places on our website to find the block patterns. Hope this helps. Thanks!
Where do I find the fabric requirements?
Hi Deb. As these are Nancy’s Notions patterns from years ago that recently came out of retirement, there were no fabric requirements for the patterns. They are simply block patterns that you can use scrap fabric for making them.
Beth love the quilt but it would be nice if we could find out what each HST had the finished size after trimming – really frustrating and where is last weeks pattern
Hi Margie! Thanks for the tips. I hadn’t realized the link wasn’t on this post. I just added it. However, each week’s newest block can always be found on our homepage, as well as under the category Free Quilt Blocks. (Just click on Quilting 101 and you will see lots of quilting categories! Free Quilt Blocks is just one of them!) Thanks for letting me know! And as for the finished HST size, I can only say that I agree with you. However, these are Nancy’s patterns from years ago and we decided to keep them original.
oh my gosh, I’m all caught up! Thank goodness tomorrow is Wednesday!
Is week 17 coming soon?
I see the 16 blocks that I printed off and then I found 17 and 18 but am unable to find and print off 19 and 20. Could be have the names of the two blocks for 19 and 20 or where can we find the original ones that go with the quilt? Thank you so much for providing this information for us. We will be making this quilt for a charity quilt for a family.
Hi Hazel! Blocks 19 and 20 haven’t been released yet. A new block is released each week. Block 19 will be released on 2/21/24 and block 20 will be on 2/28/24. I’m so glad you are enjoying the Quilt Along!
Thank you for getting back with me. Will look forward to getting them soon.
Hi Beth: Thanks for all your help with this project.
I am still unable to find Block 19 that you told us above it would be released on 2/21/24. Where will we be able to find this as it is not in the list above with the others. Thanks so much.
Can you tell me where you found 17 and 18. I’ve been looking all over.
Hi Denise. The quilt block patterns can always be accessed on our home page or in the category “Free Quilt Blocks.” I’ve also updated this article as well. Happy sewing!
Thank you!
I am looking for the instructions to sew the quilt together. I have looked twice and still have not found them.
Thank you
Darlene Crew
Hi Darlene! The finishing article can be found on our homepage, in Quilting 101, or under Project Ideas in Sewing 101. Here’s the link: https://nancysnotions.com/time-to-finish-the-sampler-quilt-along/ Hope this helps!
Is there a place to see a quilt parade of all the finished tops/quilts somewhere? I always love seeing different versions of the same quilt patterns. It is so inspiring.
