Last week I discussed how much I loved collecting tote bags. This week let’s talk about making your own bags! There are so many cute bag patterns out there – everything from purses to tote bags to luggage bags. There are also loads of tutorials to help you get started on your bag-making journey.
Sallie Tomato is a company founded by Jessica Barrera. Her designs are some of my very favorite in the bag-making world. They are all so cute and easy to make. From patterns and popular Sallie Tomato cork fabric to select sewing supplies for bag making and quality Sallie Tomato hardware, Sallie helps you make high quality finished items. Every single Sallie Tomato pattern is complete with step-by-step visual instructions to help make the pattern easy to understand. You’re sure to learn many sewing techniques and tips to help you find success! Missouri Star Quilt Co. has a huge selection of Sallie Tomato patterns and supplies.
When you think about what supplies you need to make a bag, you probably think of fabric and a pattern, right? Well, you do need those but you also need hardware. Things like D-rings, zippers, snaps, clips, etc. are an important part of bag design. Using the right accessories will make your bag look professional and top-of-the-line. Many of the patterns made by Sallie Tomato, also come with hardware kits – it’s all the hardware you need for a specific bag. For example, below you see the Hamilton Duffle by Sallie Tomato, and then next to it is the hardware kit for the Hamilton Duffle. It’s so convenient! I love that! (Shop for the Hamilton Duffle pattern and supplies here).
Below, I have two more example of beautiful Sallie Tomato designs. I swear I want to make every single bag they come out with! I just don’t have enough hours in the day to do all of them. How cute are they?
We know we can use fabric, cork, and more to make bags, but have you thought about knitting a bag? There’s just something about a knit bag that is so comfortable and cozy to carry, isn’t there? Pictured below is the Leyla Bag by Jenny Fish of One Big Happy Yarn Co. You can find the pattern here.
There are so many bag-making tutorials on Missouri Star Quilt Co. (just click “Watch” at the top of their homepage) or go to the Missouri Star Quilt Co. YouTube page. I’ll post a few of my favorites here, but there are so many out there that will help you become a great bag maker!
Well, maybe I’ve inspired you to make your own bag with a cute bag pattern you can sew at home! Happy sewing!
‘Til next time!
