My name is Ginna Berghuis from Saugatuck, Michigan. I’m delighted to share my sewing adventure with you!
My grandma was a sewer by trade and as her hobby. She gave me the big red chicken and I later adopted the small green one after her passing. The red one began to deteriorate, probably because she reused the fabric, definitely because of my neglect. I found a stack of placemats she had made from scraps of clothing she, my mother, and sisters had sewn other projects with. Being a fabric saver/reuser as well, I hung on to them for years. One never knows…
Well, I stared at the red one for a long time, got inspired, and found a replica pattern. It is produced by Yesterday’s Magic. The pattern asks for all hand sewn, but I did most of it by machine. I made the blue mattress ticking first for practice, then dove in. The pattern took two placemats per chicken, plus denim for the base. They each are weighted with a rock I collected from a vacation in northern Michigan.
Thanks!
Ginna
