Hi, I’m Caitlin! Since cool weather season is just around the corner, I’ve been making a few cowl neck fleece ponchos to share with friends. It’s a ‘no pattern’ project, that makes up easily in about 45 minutes or so. It requires 2 yards of fleece fabric, 4 cuts with your favorite fabric shears, 3 folds, literally 2 seams, and done!
The instructions are listed below, along with a few photos.
Happy sewing,
Caitlin Nordstrom
Poncho Instructions:
1. Start with a 2 yard cut of fleece fabric.
2. Measure 51” inches of length and cut from the 2-yard piece.
3. Cut selvedge edge from both sides of the fabric length and leave the edges unfinished.
4. Fold the fabric in half horizontally (with right sides together). Then fold in half again vertically. (You’ll have a rectangle, with a short side and a long side.)
5. Create the neckline opening: go to the upper corner of the folded side, then, on the shorter side, measure 2” inches from the folded corner, and place a pin there. Then, on the longer side, measure 4” from the same corner, and place a pin there. Mark each pin position with chalk, and draw a curve between the pin marks to mark a cutting line for the neckline of the poncho. Remove pins, and cut, following your chalk line. Then, mark the center front of the neckline. (Use the mark as a reference, when applying the cowl neck to the neckline of the poncho.)
5. Create the cowl neck: take your leftover piece of fleece, fold it in half and cut a 13 & 1/2” inch square on the fold. (It will be 27” long by 13 1/2″ high.) This will be used for the cowl neck. Place the right sides together and pin and stitch with a 1/4” seam allowance. Then mark the center front at the bottom of the cowl.
6. Apply cowl to neckline: with main body of poncho folded ‘right sides together’, turn cowl neck piece right side out – and insert into neckline opening. Line up the center front markings, pin and stitch neckline seam, allowing 1/2” seam allowance. Then notch the seam allowance to allow more ease to the neckline, without cutting into the stitches of the seam.
7. Then turn your poncho right-side out and it’s ready to wear!
