My name is Anne Koops and I live in St. George, a small town in southwestern Ontario, Canada. On November 17, 2023, an email from Laura at Quilting Tutorials, featured Jenny Doan’s tutorial on Jelly Roll Bags. (Click here to watch tutorial.)
Jenny shows how to make a big bag using a Jelly Roll and a bit of yardage. That email piqued my interest. Since then, I have made nine ‘Big Bags’ for some of the girls in my family, especially granddaughters. The Jelly Rolls I purchased included ten strips of fabric for each bag, so they are just a bit smaller than Jenny’s but great for shopping or going to the beach. I also placed a pocket on the inside of the bag as well as one on the outside.
My mother taught me to sew plus I learned a lot in Home Economics class. Before I went off to college, I bought an inexpensive used sewing machine thinking I could not do without one. Of course, I had very little time to sew! Sometime later, I bought a brand-new machine which still works like a charm to this day. Eventually, I hope to pass that machine on to one of my granddaughters.
But the highlight of my sewing “career” happened some years ago when one of my granddaughters asked if I would help her make her Grade 8 Graduation dress. We received many complements on Graduation Day!
On the lighter side, when my youngest son was not in school yet, I often took him along with me to the fabric store. Several years ago, he, now married with children, told me that “he was psychologically damaged” because of all those trips to the store!!!
Thanks,
Anne Koops
