Hi, I’m Caitlin and these are some of my Drawstring Jewelry Pouches that I have made. They require only basic sewing skills, are easy to make, & lovely to give as holiday gifts!
All shown below, were made from boho-print fabrics, that were upcycled from thrifted pillow shams. And yes, these were gifted to a friend, for Christmas!
Basic instructions are listed below.
Happy Sewing!

Drawstring Jewelry Pouch Instructions
Materials needed:
*about 1/3 yard of fabric for the outside panel of the drawstring bag
*about 1/3 yard of fabric for the lining
*coordinating thread
* two (36” long each)pieces of 1/8” wide cording, in coordinating color
1: Draft a circle-shaped pattern piece, about
13 & 7/8” in diameter. This will be the pattern piece for the outer fabric of the drawstring pouch, and it will also be the the pattern piece for the lining fabric.
2. With right sides together, pin the two circles of fabric together, and stitch the panels together, allowing 1/4” seam allowance – and leaving a 2” gap unsewn.
3. Using Pinking Shears, pink the circumference of the raw edge of your seam allowance, without abbreviating the width seam allowance. (This will reduce bulk, & give more ease when the pouch is cinched closed.)
4 Then turn the panels right-side out, press, and stitch the gap closed, and press again.
5. Create the casing for the drawstring, by topstitching about 1/4” from the finished edge…then topstitching again 1/2” from the first row of topstitching. (Be sure to reverse-stitch at the completion of the topstitched seams, to secure them)
6. Cut a small slit in the outer fabric (being careful not to cut through the lining fabric)
at “12:00 and 6:00” between the topstitched casing stitching. This will create an opening
at the opposite ends of the pouch, to insert the drawstring cording.
7. Using a safety pin as a bodkin, insert the cording through one opening, and out through same slit. Adjust the amount of cording needed, to your preference (ie: the pouch should look ‘kind of like a bowl’, when it’s fully opened), then knot the cording to secure, and trim 1/2” beyond the knots. Repeat with the second piece of cording, inserted through the opposite slit.
