Hello. I wanted to share the quilt I made recently. My name is Beth Romanski and I live in Clarks Summit, PA. I have been sewing quilt tops on and off for 30 years. The first quilt top I made was a 9-patch for my oldest daughter. Now that I am nearing retirement, I have time to sew more often and enjoy trying different patterns and different techniques.
My quilt is a variation on the Rick Rack Quilt. I watched a video of Jenny at Missouri Star Quilt Co. make a block for her quilt but wondered how it would look if I made all the blocks out of the same color. Hers is made with each quarter of the square a different color. I went to Joann Fabrics to find a fabric I liked so I could play around with the pattern. I found this grey fabric with tiny little snowflakes so I had to buy a yard and cut my strips. I made a block and enjoyed it, so I decided I would make a small throw size. I already had the fabric I needed to start the Block of the Month quilt published by Nancy’s Notions. I showed my block to my husband and explained what I was doing. He liked the block and pattern so much, he asked me to make a quilt large enough to cover our king-sized bed! Back to Joann’s to get more fabric I went.
My husband, Len, helped me pick the border colors. He also encouraged me when I got stuck. He helped me make decisions on how wide the borders should be and how many blocks overall I should use. His help was invaluable.
The backing is a grey flannel and the quilt is double batted. Using only one color allowed for more space to quilt so I wanted to use the double batting to help the quilting pop. The longarmer quilted Moravian stars in each square, but filled in part of each point with a different pattern. Because of the wool batting on top of the cotton, the parts of the stars that aren’t filled in lift off the quilt.
I enjoyed the process of sewing this quilt block and top. This warm, heavy quilt will be on our bed for many winters.
Thanks!
Beth Romanski
