Hi, my name is Elaine Beyer from Albany, Oregon. I have been sewing since Junior High School in Home Economics class. My mother was an excellent seamstress and had a lot of influence on my sewing skills. I have sewn quilts and a lot of clothing in the past. I started Art Quilting in 2015. My first project was of my Maine Coon cat that had recently passed. I’ve entered many of my projects in the Oregon State Fair winning 1st and 2nd ribbons which I’m very proud of.
I have an extreme love of wildlife and animals in general and tend to sew my art quilts with them in mind. I also have sewn an art quilt of my mother when she was young, in the 1940’s, which proudly won a blue ribbon; she would have been proud.
The two entries below were made this year, 2024.
All of my art quilts are of my own design, I don’t use patterns. I use my imagination or images in my mind to construct them. Luckily I have an eye for using different fabrics for hair, water, trees, etc. I also take fabrics that I visualize as antlers, trees, etc. and hand color them in with colored pencils or pastels. All free motion quilting is done by me too. The entire quilt is my creation. I thank the good Lord for giving me this talent, I give him all the credit.
I find that the eyes on the projects are the hardest to make realistically. I have an addiction to art quilting and am constantly dreaming up a new design. I also do a lot of hand sewing on these to hide the loose threads and sewing binding. Competition requires this, but I’m finding hand sewing harder to do due to arthritic hands. The reverse back side of the quilt shows some free motion techniques all done on my home sewing machine.
The table runner was made for my friend’s 50th wedding anniversary as a gift. The quilt rack was also designed by myself which I had custom made. All of my art quilts hang in my home with pride, so many hours of dedication and hard work.
Thanks!
Elaine
