Hi sewing friends! If you’re anything like me, once you have a favorite option, that’s always your favorite option. I’m like this with pizza. My favorite pizza at age 10 is still my favorite pizza today. My favorite sewing machine is still my go-to, my first pick every time, even though I have other sewing machines that are practically begging for a turn. And when it comes to rotary cutters, my favorite is always the same trusty one I always grab. However, I recently tried out the new 60 mm rotary cutter from Missouri Star. This is the one that has ball bearings in it and it makes cutting anything (even layers of denim) feel like you’re cutting butter!

Now, I know most of us already have a trusty 45 mm cutter in our toolkits. That’s what my long-time favorite is and it’s the gold standard. For goode4 reason! It’s great for everyday cutting, it’s easy to handle, and it’s precise. But let’s talk about this =big sister: the 60 mm cutter. She’s a powerhouse. That larger blade means you can slice through more layers at once (hello, time saver!), and it handles thicker materials like denim or batting like a champ. If you’ve ever struggled to cut a stack of fabric cleanly, the 60 mm just might be your new best friend.
Also, with a 60 mm cutter, you won’t have to change the blade quite as often. Since the blade is bigger, you get more cuts with less rotations. Less rotations equal less dulling.
That doesn’t mean the 45 mm gets benched. It’s still my go-to for smaller cuts, squaring up, and block work. But having both sizes? That’s the sweet spot. Think of it like having both a bread knife and a paring knife in the kitchen – each has its job, and they work best when you use them for what they’re meant for.

Anyway, that’s my two cents while I sit here sipping my coffee and pretending my fabric isn’t threatening to take over my sewing room (again). If you’ve been curious about giving the 60 mm a whirl, now’s the time. It might just earn a permanent spot next to your 45 mm – and hey, who doesn’t love a little backup in the rotary department?
Happy cutting, friends! ‘Til next time!
