Hi, I’m Wendy. I made these two pillows for my mother as a Mother’s Day gift. She loved pink and also loved peony flowers, so I chose a traditional pattern called Peony. I prefer all-cotton fabrics, pre-shrunk, although I will use a poly/cotton mix if I just really like the print. I made templates for the shapes out of thin cardboard.
I sewed the patches together on a very old Singer sewing machine. I didn’t have a steam iron then, so I used a dry iron with a separate water mister bottle to dampen for pressing. All quilting was done by hand, with poly/cotton thread, using a 6-inch transparent plastic ruler to measure every stitch so that they were all exactly 1/4 inch long. I was very meticulous about these stitches and if they didn’t get in straight the first time, I pulled them out and re-did them more perfectly. My patience for this amazes me! The stuffing of the pillows is loose poly fill.
My mother (now deceased) loved this gift and displayed them carefully on a sofa in a back room that is normally dark, so they were never exposed to sun-fading. After her passing, I inherited them back, and now display them in my home on Mother’s Day as a happy reminder of her..Size of each pillow is about 14-inch square.
