I decided to make tree skirts for my married grandchildren, hopefully, to become family heirlooms. I was born and brought up in Springfield Ma. After I got married we moved to Pueblo, Colorado where we lived for 38 years. I now live in Denton, Texas.
I have always been a ‘sewer’, having taught myself to sew out of necessity because I always got my older sisters’ hand me downs. I began embroidering after my husband bought me an embroidery machine for a retirement gift. I have done a little quilting, but mostly it is embroidering or sewing.
I wanted to make a tree skirt for myself but decided to make each of my married grandchildren one first. I started with the North Pole tree skirt for my granddaughter. My grandsons’ wife wanted to go Black and White for Christmas, so I started, with a little trepidation to pick out different Christmas designs and put them on various black materials – it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Instead of making my tree skirt, I made one for my son the minister (hence, the Nativity). I still haven’t gotten mine made – but I am determined to have one by Christmas.
In the “North Pole” tree skirt there are 45 panels – 15 in each of the three layers. I used the same layout for my grandson’s black and white tree skirt, but had to come up with my own embroidery for the middle and outer panels. I used the same stars, swirls and Santa but had to improvise the rest. I wanted to make sure that my great-grand daughter had Santa and snowmen at least. I have to admit – it didn’t look as bad as I thought it would. I didn’t take a picture of it after it was done, but I did take the picture when all the top was done, I only had to attach the back.
I love to make things for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren – such as books, blankets, games, etc.. I really enjoy in-the-hoop projects, especially for the holidays. I have done many stand alone or FSL projects, such as free-standing Easter eggs, Christmas ornaments, bowls, baskets, earrings and barrettes. I do a different table runners or table toppers for the different seasons and holidays. I also enjoy making wall hangings.
Thanks!
