Hello, my name is Lee Buckland-Toole and I live in North Abington Township, PA. The quilt I am sharing is my latest attempt at decreasing my stash and using up the abundance of orange fabrics. I do consider it a scrap quilt since the fabrics have sat unused for so long that they all look like scrap to me lately!
I was inspired by a scrappy, pieced block taught by Candace Hassen on episode 3107 of The Quilt Show. She demonstrated making diagonally strip pieced blocks of one size in 2 colorways. Then sewing one of each block with strips going opposite, right sides together around the perimeter, then cutting on the diagonal in both directions. You now have 4 half square triangle blocks. The outer edges of your blocks are on the bias so starching and careful handling helps.
I played and played with the blocks and many ideas until this quilt was born. I love monarch butterflies, so I traced a simple line drawing onto orange fabric. I then used fabric paint to paint in the black and white details and turned each one into an applique.
Using simple straight line quilting, one inch apart, I was able to do the entire piece on my domestic machine.
Thank you for the years of inspiration and instruction on Sewing With Nancy.
