Hey, hey, sewing friends! 👋 It’s Beth from Beth Said Sew, and today I’m bringing you something fun —the perfect companion for those long sewing sessions: TV shows! We’ve all been there—piecing quilt blocks for hours or embroidering on a lazy Sunday—and what’s better than having a good show running in the background? Whether you’re in need of a little inspiration, something light-hearted, or a full-on quilting binge-fest, I’ve got you covered. Grab your fabric, your favorite snack, and let’s dive into five TV shows that are made for sewing along with.
1. The Great British Sewing Bee 🧵
Of course, we have to start with the ultimate sewing show, right? The Great British Sewing Bee is like the quilting world’s version of a cozy blanket. It’s a British reality competition that pits amateur sewists against each other, and while they tackle a variety of sewing projects—from garments to home decor—you’ll be inspired to try new techniques and challenge yourself. Plus, it’s just so charming! Watch it for the techniques, stay for the heartwarming stories and hilarious British banter.

2. Making It 🌟
If you love a little creative variety while you sew, Making It—hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman—is a must-watch! This show isn’t specifically about sewing, but it’s all about making and crafting. From woodworking to fabric arts, it’s a celebration of all things handmade, and the best part is the sense of community among the makers. You’ll find yourself inspired by the contestants’ creativity, and their out-of-the-box ideas will give you plenty of fresh thoughts for your own sewing projects.

3. Hallmark Christmas Movies
Yes, I’m a sucker for those sappy Hallmark Christmas movies! I love them all and I will watch them all! Every. Single. One. I know they’re predictable. I know they all have similar plots. I don’t care. These are perfect for sewing days because you don’t have to have your eyes glued to the screen to know what is happening. You can have your eyes on your sewing project and just glance at the screen every so often. It’s a great way to get in the Christmas spirit and they are especially fun to watch if you’re working on a Christmas quilt!
4. Sitcoms
Sometimes you just want something familiar and comforting while you sew, and for me, that’s old sitcoms. There’s something about having classic sitcoms running in the background that makes sewing feel even cozier. You know the episodes by heart, so there’s no pressure to pay attention to every line—just let the laughter roll while you work on your next quilt or embroidery project. The characters all feel like old friends and it’s nice to see them every once in a while. Some of my favorites are: Golden Girls, Cheers, Brady Bunch, Gunsmoke, Little House on the Prairie, and Designing Women.

5. Audiobooks
Sometimes, I don’t even turn on the tv, but I still like to hear a story. Audiobooks are perfect if I’m sewing something that my eyes need to stay focused on. I love to read a good book, but I also love listening to audiobooks. It allows me to do two things simultaneously. Multitasker deluxe! I like a lot of different genres, but typically prefer books that are not too stressful, have clean language, but also have a great plot! I love historical fiction and mysteries. Some of my favorite authors are Fiona Davis, Kate Morton, and Alice Feeney. I just finished Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney and if you’re looking for a fun little Halloween story, that’s not too dark, this is perfect! It’s so well-written! I also just finished From Here to the Great Unknown by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough. (It has bad language in it, so if that bothers you, beware.) It is Lisa Marie’s autobiography and it was fascinating. The audio version is read by Julia Roberts. If you’re an Elvis fan, you’ll like it!

I don’t have a TV in my sewing room, so I listen to audio-books. I have a collection of Charles Dickens books I’m working through right now. He was a good storyteller. I prefer to listen to Dickens rather than read Dickens.
I “watch” reruns of my favorite old programs. I don’t have to look at the TV because I know the characters and the plot but it keeps me company. It’s like having an old friend visiting while I work.
