Design walls are an amazing tool for quilters. They allow you to lay out your blocks without bending over to the floor or sitting on the floor. They allow you to envision what the quilt will look like when it’s all put together by utilizing your wall space instead of your floor space. Genius!
This free pattern uses gridded flannel and is fun to make! Download or print the free pattern here!
When making your Portable Flannel Design Wall, use either gridded or solid flannel, to aid in planning your quilted project. Your blocks and other fabric designs cling to the flannel so that you can arrange to your heart’s desire…without pins! This portable wall is created with a backing of Quilted Iron Quick, so that if you need to give your design a quick press, you can do so without having to go to your ironing board.
This free pattern goes together quickly and you will have a new design wall in no time flat! Happy sewing!

My sewing studio has very limited wall space. So, I made an extra tall queen sized quilt and hung it from the ceiling in the middle of my sewing studio on a curtain rod parallel to my cutting table.
On the side facing away from the cutting table I can see the extra tall quilt front, hang other smaller quilts from the curtain rod, or pin to the quilt front itself.
On back side of the quilt (the side facing my cutting table) is pinned an inexpensive dollar store tablecloth with a fuzzy back that I use as my design board.
If I don’t want to see the quilt or design board I just slide the quilt to the wall. If I need a place to change into a garment I’ve made I pull it back out from the wall and have privacy.
It was an attractive and versatile, way to showcase quilts and have a design wall that can delineate the space in my sewing studio. It was a win-win for me.
Thank you for the pattern and links. I am always using my floor and it’s a pain to do this! This will make it easier for me to showcase what I’m doing.
The pattern says the material required is “quilted iron quik” but the product linked in the article is iron quik fabric that is not quilted. I cannot find a quilted iron quik for sale, so does the pattern call for iron quik that I myself quilt? Or is the design wall just two fabric layers?
