Ready for a Spring Sewing Challenge?

by Beth Cooper

Who doesn’t love a good sewing or quilting challenge? Am I right? We love them! We may not always love the challenges that life throws us (Hey! Your furnace, washer, water heater, and car all quit in the same week. You’re welcome. Signed, Life), but we sure do love a challenge that involves fabric! I find that a challenge motivates me to get up off my tush and get to sewin’! I really believe that challenges are the reason I improved as a sewist. I am competitive and I also like to prove to myself that I can do hard things.

One Step Up the Ladder!

So, that brings me to this: I’m issuing a new Spring Sewing Challenge! Woot woot!! It is called the Step Up Challenge, because I am challenging you to take one step up in skill level. Are you a beginner who has done several beginner patterns? Then, I challenge you to take on a pattern difficulty level of Confident Beginner or Intermediate. Are you someone who has never sewn anything but wants to try? Well then, I challenge you take on a Beginner pattern!

And let’s not forget those Intermediate sewists out there. You’ve been sewing at an Intermediate level for awhile, haven’t you? Well friend, it’s time to step up to the next level! Try an Advanced difficulty pattern! What if you’re already an advanced sewist? You have options! I challenge you to design a pattern or try a pattern that is out of your comfort level.

Pushing ourselves one step up on the ladder of difficulty is good for us. I bet you will be surprised to find out that you are actually ready for the next step. Sometimes you just need a nudge up the ladder. That’s me. I’m the nudge.

When I say “pattern,” it can mean a quilt pattern or a garment pattern, or a bag pattern, etc. Whatever you enjoy making, keep going! Just try a new pattern that is slightly harder than what you have been sewing previously. That is the challenge.
