Quilter’s Name: Barbara Porter from Kansas City, Kansas
Name of Pattern: Happy Squares (Original Design)
Featured Date: 08-14-24
My name is Barbara Porter. I live in Kansas City, Kansas. I started quilting in 2017. My quilt is 60”x60”. The blocks are finished at 3”. Each square is a square in a square, only my centers are not all square. You could call it a square in a square scrappy quilt. I call it Happy Squares!! There are 400, 3 inch squares in the quilt.
I am not a fan of scrap quilts. I have a lot of scraps that my Mother-In-Law had at the time of her passing (she was a wonderful quilter) and of course I have accumulated more of my own. I set out to make blocks that would like each other. I wanted each block to make the block next to it shine. I made the blocks over many months. I then put it up on the design wall and for two months I moved the blocks around until they came together in a pleasing way. I wanted the eye to move and rest.
I wish that people could desire to make the person next to them shine!! I love this quilt because I see it as a HAPPY QUILT. I have made 149 quilts over the past 7 ½ years most I have given away. But this one I plan to keep!!
P.S. I have started a second one and that one I will give away.
Blessings,
Barbara Porter

I just want to say that I LOVE the story of and behind this quilt — that it’s a happy quilt (oh how happy it is), and that wouldn’t it be nice if we treated people like quilts….:-) I’ve looked at so many of your quilt-and-tells, but this one really “spoke” to me. I too give most of my quilts away or donate them for auction. Thanks very much for this one!
Barbara- this is a happy quilt! I am not a scrappy person- but I think I could do something like this with my scraps. You showed great patience to have the pieces up that long to make the perfect placement!
It is a happy quilt, it makes me smile just looking at it! Great job!!
Is this block all pieces or did you place a solid block in the center of a solid piece? Love your quilt.
Where can I buy this pattern? I am having an awful time. Please help.
