There’s something about quilters and sewists – we just seem to have an unbreakable bond with our pets. Whether it’s a cat lounging across freshly pressed quilt blocks or a dog curled up under our sewing table, our fur-babies are as much a part of our creative process as fabric and thread. If you sew, odds are you have a furry supervisor (or two… or three) keeping a close eye on your work, offering their help in the form of stray hairs woven into projects or an impromptu game of “steal the spool.”
I know this all too well. My own trio of feline assistants—Eloise, Luella, and Roxanne—are always nearby, ensuring I stay on task (or at least amused). Eloise, my 17-year-old, one-eyed wonder, has earned the nicknames Pirate Kitty and Ello-Weasel. She’s the grand dame of the sewing space, overseeing all activities with the wisdom of a cat who’s seen more fabric than she can count. Then there’s Lulu, age 7, who enjoys finding the most inconvenient places to nap—usually right where I need to work. And Roxanne, aka Roxanna Banana, the 4-year-old troublemaker, is the first to pounce on a stray scrap or chase a spool of thread across the room.

If you’re a fellow sewist with a pet, you get it. Our animals become our constant companions, and it’s only natural to want to sew something just for them! Pet projects are a great way to use up scraps or showcase that adorable cat or dog fabric we can’t resist adding to our stash. Think cozy pet beds, quilted placemats for food bowls, or even little bandanas to give your fur-baby a touch of handmade style.

How cute are these two pet projects from The Whole Country Caboodle? You can find them both by clicking here!
And let’s not forget our love for pet-themed fabric! Whether you’re making a full-sized quilt, a tote bag, or even a set of cute zipper pouches, fabric featuring paw prints, cats, or dogs lets us celebrate our four-legged friends in our sewing projects.

You can find cat quilt patterns and dog quilt patterns on Missouri Star Quilt Co.!
So, tell me—do you have a sewing sidekick? A pup who loves to snuggle under your latest quilt or a cat who insists every project is theirs? I’d love to hear all about your fur-baby (or see photos—because let’s be honest, we all love pet pictures). And if you’re stitching up something special for them, even better!
Now, if you’ll excuse me, Eloise is demanding a lap nap, Lulu has stolen my fabric scissors, and Roxanne just knocked a stack of fat quarters off the table. Business as usual in my sewing room!
‘Til next time,
Beth
