Hi, I’m Evvy. I call this my surprise quilt because a few weeks ago I found a bunch of leftover patches from a project I finished about 6 years ago. The new found patches were tucked away in one of the many boxes that supposedly organize my fabrics in my basement studio; there were a lot of 4 by 4 squares and half triangle squares of various shades of light and dark batiks mostly in blues and greens. Here you go:
I recently learned to use the long arm quilter at a local studio that rents the machine by the hour. It took about as long to get the fabric on the rails as it did to quilt this 44 x 52” piece. I am especially proud of using Photoshop to wipe out my husband’s legs in the shot where he is holding up the quilt in front of our garage!
Another fun thing about making the little surprise… I was using these left over fabrics that I bought a long time ago. I didn’t have any real yardage left over especially since I recall using some of this particular fabric to make medical masks in the early days of the pandemic. Here is a sketch I did as part of a 30 day Urban Sketch challenge during the pandemic…
I do digress… anyway, I wanted to match one of the light greens for the first border around the big checkerboard field. I scanned it and used Google Lens help me track down the fabric to a store in California. Actually it wasn’t an exact match but close enough! It tickles me that you can use 21st century technology in a craft that has been around for centuries.
The “little surprise” came from this earlier Queen size quilt. It was a lot of work and I really didn’t like it when it was done. I thought it looked like a big argyle sweater reincarnated as the thing on my bed. (It no longer lives with me. I found a good home for it.) Here goes…
And that’s the story of my little surprise quilt!

What a creative way to repurpose leftover fabric! The quilt looks stunning and full of character.
Wow! What a lovely surprise! I also really love the original that this was a bonus from. I have made several quilts that when they were finished I didn’t love and it was relatively easy to find good homes for them(I will admit some I haven’t even finished because I lost the mojo on them!)
Evvy-who knew you would have so many surprises from that original quilt! Your drawing is wonderful and I actually like both quilts. I’m glad you found a new home for the larger one as it is very pretty. Matching fabric is challenging- but I’ll have to remember to try that Google Lens sometime.
