Hi, my name is Viola. My daughter, Michelle Wise, introduced me to collage quilting several years ago and I love it. My husband and I worked together on our first collage quilt during covid quarantines when we had more time on our hands. I’ve now completed 4 collage quilts.
Recently I completed “Seed Pods,” a Laura Heine collage quilt pattern. Quilter’s Preview Paper was a new technique used in this quilt so I attended the class at Austin’s Sewing Center in Louisville, KY, taught by the certified Laura Heine Instructor, Michelle Wise (my daughter). The class was both educational and So Much Fun! Austin’s and Michelle selected beautiful fabrics for this kit and some participants brought cuttable fabrics to share. Seeing how the same fabric choices were transformed into different Seed Pod creations was inspirational.
I used the beautiful fabric provided in the kit by Austin’s in addition to a few other fabric pieces. I want to mention the partial poem in the top left. This was a piece of background fabric provided in the Kit, and even though it is not the entire poem, I thought it was especially fitting for this quilt. The name of the poem is “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” by Emily Dickinson.
For quilting I chose 100% cotton, Coats & Clark Machine Quilting thread (ART S975 Q3 8020) to blend with the background. I quilted with a vertical swirl decorative stitch, close together.
Thanks for this opportunity to show my quilt.

Viola- this is an awesome quilt. When you first look, you see the pods, then you see the animals, the birds, the lady bugs… It’s like a treasure hunt– quilted style!
