Halloween sewing might just be my new favorite kind of sewing. Leading up to the Missouri Star Halloween Party, I decided to take on something I had never tried before: making a hat. Not just any hat, but a witch’s hat! I used the Quilted Witch’s Hat pattern by Sew A Story, and it was an adventure from the very first stitch.
I’ve pieced together plenty of quilts and embroidered more than a few shoes, but somehow a hat felt like uncharted territory. There were moments when the brim looked more like a frisbee than a fashion statement, and at one point I sewed a section completely upside down. My seam ripper and I became very close friends during this project. Watching the shape take form was pure magic. The quilted panels came together beautifully, and by the end, I had something that looked delightfully whimsical and perfectly spooky. I could not wait to show it off.

The Missouri Star Halloween Party was absolutely worth every stitch. The streets of Hamilton were filled with creative costumes, laughter, and that cozy autumn excitement that only quilters can bring. Everyone admired my handmade hat, and I loved telling them it was quilted. The entire event had that special Missouri Star charm with great people, endless inspiration, and just enough mischief to keep things interesting.
Any time is a great time to visit Hamilton, Missouri, but event weeks are truly the best. There is something about being surrounded by so many fellow makers that makes the whole town feel alive. If you missed this year’s fun, mark your calendar now and join us next time. In March, Missouri Star celebrates National Quilting Month with fun and games all month long. June 10–11 brings Missouri Star Academy, a fantastic opportunity to take classes and learn from incredible instructors. Birthday Bash, the biggest celebration of the year, will be held September 16–19, and next year’s Halloween Party will take place October 22–23, 2026.
‘Til next time! Happy sewing!
